Health
& Wellbeing for All
What
does being “healthy” mean, anyway?
Health - "A state of complete physical, mental
and social well-being and not merely the absence of
disease or infirmity" - WHO. Constitution of
the World Health Organization, Geneva, 1946.
Freedom
from disease is relatively easier to assess and is measured
using clearly defined parameters depending on the individual’s
system functions. Health
is the most important asset that we have. Whatever we
have is unimportant without good health. Here you will
find resources to enhance your good health and well-being,
be it advice, supplements, nutrition, exercise, hygiene,
diets, and other aspects of healthcare both mental and
physical.
What is the
definition of health and wellbeing?
If healthy means being free from disease,
then we have to define what well-being means. The broad
common use of the word “well-being”
means how well life is going for an individual. Therefore
health is only part of well-being albeit an important
part. Well-being in its broadest sense includes good
health, physical, mental, spiritual, wealth within the
individual’s wellbeing context. This allows the individual
to set his or her own parameters.
Still in fullest usage, well-being
can have a communal aspect to it as well.
The United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP) defines well-being as a State of human existence
in which a person's basic needs are adequately met and
satisfied.
